Webseries Creator Rule Part 1

webseries, production, new media, actor, actress, creatorEvery crew is guided by a set of distinct principles, no matter its size, budget, or popularity. Studio productions with budgets in excess of hundreds of millions of dollars typically use hundreds of people, dozens of departments. How do these principles apply to the smallest of independent crews? What if you are creating a webseries using friends, family, or called in a few favors? If you are even considering creating a webseries there are several principles to consider to guarantee your success.

Guideline

First, and foremost you must establish guidelines for yourself and your production crew! As its creator the responsibility falls to you to set the example, not only in workmanship, and professionalism of your set, but also the overall “tone of your production.” You are the leader. Here are a few suggestions to set the quality of your work environment.

Punctual : This is a universal principle that speaks volumes of your character. Being late plagues all of us over achievers at one time, but it is no excuse.

Prepared : If you are prepared it subconsciously signals that you are professional. Nothing is worse then showing up on time, but unprepared so you have to rework things.

Courteous : You would be amazed at how far a simple please, and thank will get you. Humor also lightens the load during those long production hours.

Passionate : Remember you are all in it for the art, as well for your paycheck. If you enjoy your work you will create a certain type of magnetism that most crazy creative types thrive off of.

Motivated: You must motivate your crew, and channel their energies into a bankable result.  Motivate your crew personally, simply don’t be saisifed with movement. Movement isn’t improvement.

Personality: Often web series creators have a tendency to a rockstar approach. This carefree attitude will translate across the camera to your potential sponsors as they watch a sloppy production.

Obviously, there are exceptions to every rule, but luckly these are guidlines and are open to variables and debate. Those of you veteran webseries creators what advice have you found to be most helpful?

What is your work ethic? What is your visual pallet? A haphazard energy will not maintain your crew, it will divide it.

“Twist” Webseries Casting

Twist follows the complications of a young girl named Jewyl, trying to escape her past, as well as a band of teen-aged thieves struggling to survive under the tutelage of an older, benevolent career criminal and a brutal, sadistic crime boss as they all run out of time as the FBI closes in. Krimson-Noiro Productions is currently casting for the following  multi-ethnic (Caucasian, Hispanic, African-American, Asian, etc) roles, and so all are encouraged to apply.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

(Although some characters are noted as underage, all actors are required to be 18 and older)

Jewyl: (17 yrs old, 5″3′ or shorter) Tough, streetwise, and able to kick-butt. She’s small in stature, but can handle herself and anyone else that gets in her way. Her only weakness is that she cares more than she will admit, although is loyal to no one but herself. However, she is at a point in her life where those two points are ready to change. (Marshal arts training, tattoos, and piercing a plus)

Agent Garrett: (Male, mid-30s) A sarcastic, but tough minded FBI agent who is looking to build his case anyway he can, using questionable tactics, people, and anything else he can to forward his goal of success.

Agent Spence: (Any sex, mid-30s) A steady hand, and a ray of light to Garrett’s darker side, Spence sees the world as inherently good, which may or may not be beneficial.

Stick: (Male, 17 yrs old, 5′9″ – 6′0″) The leader of the band of boys, Stick’s size is only matched by his tender heart, although he hides it well because

Top Five Tax Cuts for Actors by Lira Kellerman

KISS MY TAX! I absolutely hate procrastinating, so I always seem to spend the first of the new year going over receipts. So let’s go over what a Struggling Actress should go through and save, shall we? Some of these may seem obvious, but a few should be a revelation!

1. Cell Phone!  It helps you stay in contact with your agent, scoring and confirming auditions, callbacks, and hooray, the job itself. Keep your monthly bills!

2. Netflix/movies/cable/internet! This all falls under the “research” category. You watch movies to study acting, to understand different directors’ styles, and you watch cable and tv to understand the type of acting required for the show you’re auditioning, and the internet is for Hulu and submitting yourself online using all those handy dandy actor websites.

3. Medical! Saw a chiropractor to improve your posture (like moi)? Got glasses (not contacts, mind you, although I have no idea why.)? Saw the doctor for any ailments? Deduct away!

4. Networking! You went to a few of those “Industry Events” where they promise agents and casting directors, but all you got were fellow non-union actors, right? Well, the ticket price of $20 that you paid to attend is deductible. If you and an actor friend go out to eat and discuss acting coaches, movies, agents and projects you auditioned for/creating, the money you paid is tax deductible. JenIsIris and I always find some time to do exactly that. Hooray!

5. Networking Gifts! When you booked your commercial, you sent your agent a bouquet of flowers, and guess what! Up to $25/gift is deductible! Or, did you do a play and gave every cast member a small gift each under $25? Deductible! And wow, you are super nice. And here’s where it gets super fun: If you have ever hired your friend, or hired someone who became your friend and you hang out with them and buy them a drink, or a birthday gift, or you go out and got a frozen yogurt together to catch up, it is deductible! Our tax lady told us that because I had hired my beau Antne on my film, the dinners we go out to could be considered deductible! Now, this makes me feel a leeeetle bit uneasy, so we don’t abuse it. But fun, right?

Hopefully this helps! Depending on the responses we get I will most likely be posting more, and adding to the list!

“Have You Been In Anything I’ve Seen?”            By Lira Kellerman

Last night, I was waiting tables and a guy came back to see me because he had a great time the last time I served him (dirty joke here). Let’s call him Tony. He said, I’m surprised that you’re only a writer because you have such a great personality, I could easily see you as an actress. That’s right, I only told him that I had written a webseries and was casting it. Why? Because honestly, saying I’m an actress makes me less interesting. If I’m an actress, I’m a dime a dozen. If I’m a writer (blogger, former columnist [but that could change soon, more details on that later, promise!] screenwriter, published poet (National Library of Poetry is a joke, but hey, I was 12 and my poem was in an actual book!) I am way more interesting. And you know what? I’m smarter. If I can string a couple of sentences together, I am a brilliant person. A million times smarter than that stupid waitress with a never to be realized dream!

Admit it. We all judge. And it’s okay. I get it. I do it too.

So after I admitted to Tony that I WAS an actress, he got excited.

“Have you been in anything I’ve seen?”

Struggling actresses usually HATE this question because if we’ve been in anything you’ve seen, we wouldn’t be waiting tables!

But I was able to actually list off a couple of things I’ve been in. And chances are, if you’re a stay at home mom and love either Discovery Health or TLC, you’ve seen me. AND, an old friend messaged me on Facebook, saying, “Hey I could’ve sworn I saw you on America’s Most Wanted the other night.” And hooray! That explains my imdb jump (26,152 on my starmeter, which means absolutey nothing).

I’m excited for 2010. I hope to be in a few more things that you’ll get to see.

“Kyle Piccolo” Webseries Review

For some, comics are therapy. They’re a way to escape the real world into a land of panels, colors and exaggerated body-types. Some call it art. Some call it literature. Some call it pathetic. Kyle Piccolo calls it psychology and applies it to everyday life. Successfully I might add. One part mega-nerd, one part psychologist, one part rant-poet, one part Jack Black on a very bad hair day… and you got the very animated character of Kyle Piccolo. Add to that his utter disrespect for his employee/sidekick Doucheus, and you actually have a type of anti-comic book hero team.

People come to his comic book shop to buy comics and get advice on life. Not that he exactly seems like the qualified guy to do so. Yet Kyle knows it all and yet knows nothing. He can see into the hearts of his customers and like a good pharmacist, or, more fittingly, bartender, prescribe the right medication in form of a comic book.

The show is fantastically well written, acted and produced. The comedic cues work every time, be it through the music, the actor’s glances or the editing. Not a single cue is missed and thats such a blessing. Not surprisingly, the crew behind the show are seasoned professionals and equally unsurprisingly, the show is branded. After all, Kyle always manages to push some comic book on unsuspecting clients, and even makes several Watchmen related jokes and references. In fact, how many Watchmen hints can you pick out? I wonder…

Indeed, since the launch (and crash) of the Watchmen movie, there really haven’t been any updates to the show. Still, whatever episodes there are, Kyle manages to hold the attention and the focus of the show.

But seriously, am I the only one who is seeing Jack Black in him?

“Trenches” Webseries Update

We’ve been waiting for this show for literally years and it’s finally coming back! Trenches was initially scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2009, but one year later we still didn’t see anything online beyond the trailer. Creator Shane Felux found many reasons to blame on his blog, but most of all the usual industry issues putting up roadblocks. For a simple hand-to-mouth film-maker like Shane, that can be incredibly furstrating. Our hearts were with you, Shane.

But, to quote the ever popular Dolly Levi: “If you have to live from hand to mouth, you better be ambidextrous!”, Shane kept himself busy working, shooting and even selling of props from his previous internet sensation, the Lucas-blessed Star Wars fan-film Revelations.

And continually pushing the release for his epic (guess, what it had a $250k budget!) web series that Disney so unceremoniously had tossed aside. Indeed, after The Great Web Series Rush of ‘08 web studios such as Stage 9 got dropped like naughty puppies that had seemed so cute at first, and shows like Trenches got rejected like something the puppy had coughed up.

But then the sky opened up and the New York Times broke the news: Trenches is going to Crackle.com, thanks to a deal with Sony.

Indie film-makers world-wide rejoiced! One of us finally ran the industry-blockade and made it beyond Greenlitland into the Nation of Distribution. February 16 is the big day for all you non-geoblocked viewers. For everyone else, they promised eventual YouTube uploads.

In celebration, here is the trailer. No, its not yet another horrible Starship Troopers sequel or a long-lost conclusion to Space: Above and Beyond. No, it does not look like any other generic war-in-space movie/TV show.

Well, okay, maybe a little.

LG15 : Outbreak Episode 1 Webseries Review

The first episode has launched and LG15 is once again an active part of the web series world. Outbreak does not have a powerhouse opening like Resistance or The Last, but ventures more into the “hi, guess what, I’m vlogging” territory once explored by the original LG15 Bree and later by Kate in KateModern. Despite that, YouTube already has a long list of positive comments and it seems everyone is very eager to welcome this new ‘vlogger’ into the internets and pretend she’s a real person. Which she of course is, except, uh… you know what I mean.

Her name is Crystal O’Brian, she’s cute (aren’t they all?), loves art (such as it is), knows how to use Mace (so did the 9/11 hijackers), slams doors on possible suitors (I feel your pain, brother) and for some reason moved into a new city to start a new life (Squee! Intrigue!). She has a Twitter pagea Facebook page and uses the name of ArtGirl47 (AG47?) on the lg15.com messageboards, and those will serve as a platform for fans to explore the puzzles and clues that will no doubt be released upon a very suspecting viewership.

Oh, did I mention at the beginning there may be some spoilers in this article? Darnit, too late. Well, there will be more episodes here on VisiwebTV. We’ll try again.

LG15 : Outbreak Trailer

We had been warned, and here it is. The trailer of yet another installment in the LG15 epic.

We’ve mentioned it before, but LG15: Outbreak was the third pilot submission for EQAL’s second LG15: The Show Is Yours contest, where the original creators of LG15 outsourced the continuation of their epic to fans.

Was that a good idea? If LG15: The Last, the previous fan-created installation is any indication, then yes. The trailer looks simple but promising. It is after all a fan-based creation and just about a notch below the usual EQAL creations where quality is concerned, but that never stopped a good story. The series will launch on January 11th, 2010 and VisiowebTV will be there, front row. And if we are, so will you.

On an amusing side note, on the trailer’s YouTube message board there is a buzz (and by extension on Tubefilter who should have known better) about a mysterious whispering voice towards the end of the trailer, and someone even uploaded a backwards version of that section to decipher the possible meaning and it seems hundreds of fans have been playing the recording back and forth trying to decipher it. Unfortunately there is no hidden message. The voice says “Revostock” which as most editors know is the company Revostock.com’s way of watermarking their template stock audio products. Must be a doodoo by the trailer editor, using stock music that still had an audio watermark. Oops. You can go the Revostock site and check out some of their stock music. The samples all have that mysterious voice.

In fact, much of the trailer’s effects seem as if someone had made extensive use of the creator resources links collection here on VisiowebTV, which is actually quite commendable…

Acting School: Auditions 101

I am often asked about auditioning – “what’s the secret?”

There really aren’t any secrets, but there is a checklist. Here is my memory word, a word you can use to make every audition more successful – by going through the checklist.

The word is PARADIGM.

PPrepare. Preparation usually involves several steps. Here are just a few: Know what you are auditioning for. Ask questions, get information, listen carefully. Familiarize yourself with the script (if there is one). If there is a script (or sides), study the character and make a couple of solid choices as to how you will perform it. If there is no script, but you have a general description of the character you are trying out for, again make some choices. Plan your trip to the place where the audition is taking place. Have your outfit picked out. Make sure you have gas in the car – or correct change for public transportation. Plan the day ahead of time. Give yourself plenty of time to get ready (hair, make-up, etc.).

The number one element in a successful audition – that most casting directors point to – is preparation.

AArrive early. This is VERY important. When you arrive early you accomplish two crucial things: First, you are “on time.” This is a must in our industry. People who show up late are a pain in the ___ (fill in your choice of body part). Producers hate late. Directors loathe the lackadaisical. Other actors don’t like it much either. Casting directors are unlikely to form a favorable impression of you if you are late. That’s because if you are cast (on their recommendation) and then you show up late for production, they will get yelled at. CD’s don’t like getting yelled at. They are unlikely to recommend you if you are late. (Don’t “sign in” early as this will cause problems. Get there and wait nearby.)

The second thing that happens when you arrive early is you have time to do the next part of a successful audition which is:

RRelax. Being relaxed is important to your results. If you are keyed up, stressed, rushed or still coming down from the trip to the audition – it will cost you. Almost everybody needs some time to “get ready.” Only you can know how much time you will need, but whatever it is – that’s how early you have to get there.

There are about as many techniques for relaxation as there are humans on the planet – so I’ll skip listing them. The bottom line? The relaxed actor is the more successful actor. Why? Because if you are relaxed, you help relieve the natural anxiety the casting director, producer and director are also dealing with in the audition process. Oh, yes, it’s tough on them too. If they don’t get it right it can ruin an entire production. So, believe me, they are stressed. Relax and the whole world relaxes with you.

AAct. A lot of actors forget the purpose of an audition. The CD’s, directors and producers are looking for a performer – which means it is important to perform. This is another reason to relax. It’s easier to remember to do the job when you are at ease.

DDeal. Every audition is just one of the many you will have in your career. If you are a normal human being you will “fail” 80% of the time. Not just at auditions either. The best piece of advice about this failure business is given by one of the richest men in the world, Bill Gates; “If you want to be more successful, double your failure rate.”

The most difficult thing to ‘deal’ with in the entertainment industry is the inevitable – “I didn’t get it.” – realization You must understand that this is going to be the case much more often than not. Rejection is not an easy thing to deal with, but if you want to be a successful actor you must learn to deal with it. It’s a central part of a professional acting career.

As I have pointed out, more than once, even successful established actors are rejected a lot. Every time a part is being cast (say, Batman or Scarlett O’Hara) there are hundreds of professional, money-earning stars who are dismissed as possibilities and dozens of others who meet with the producers and find out later that – “I didn’t get it.” Dealing with rejection is crucial to your eventual success. So, deal with it.

I - Impress. If you accomplish the goals on this list, you will impress the people doing the casting. You will be considered a “pro.” Professionalism is the word you want attached to your efforts. This will happen if you are on time, prepared, entertaining, relaxed and able to deal with the inevitable rejection that follows most auditions. That’s your goal in every audition – to impress them with your professional attitude.

Even if you don’t get this one, when you impress the CD, the director or the producer with your pro attitude, they will think of you for something else. Guaranteed.

GGrace. Gracious people have the edge. We like them, we trust them, we want to work with them. Be polite. Remember people’s names. Be helpful. Listen carefully. Follow directions. Don’t impose your ‘neediness’ on the CD. You will always leave a good impression if you are gracious to other people in the business. Think Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn.

Your mantra should be; “I’m nice … to other people.”

MManipulate. If you hope to succeed you will probably need to manipulate somebody.

Of course, there is only one human being you really have any control over – and have any hope of manipulating: Yourself.

  • If you are a poor planner, you must manipulate your mind set to correct this deficiency.
  • If being turned down puts you in a deep funk, you must manipulate your reaction.
  • If you panic, you must manipulate your mental state until this is no longer a problem.

In other words, don’t waste a minute of your time trying to find the “reasons” behind someone else’s decisions and attempt to change her mind. Take a step back from every ‘failure’ and discover what needs manipulating in your own actions and reactions.

You can only change the world by changing yourself.

That’s my audition PARADIGM.

Webseries Casting “The Hunted”

“The Hunted” Synopsis

We are The Hunted – survivors of vampire attacks who have banded together to protect ourselves from becoming cattle. Like sharks in a feeding frenzy, they are drawn by the scent of those who have been bitten (unless masked by garlic pills), and continue to drain us until we turn and become one of them, unable to exist without a constant supply of fresh human blood. Our only defense is to stick together. Several groups have been formed such as the VA (Vampires Anonymous) which meets on a regular basis to help members cope with various issues including blood addiction. READ MORE

Webseries Casting “Out With Dad”

“Out With Dad” is an upcoming web series about teenage girl and a single father who have a close and positive relationship. Rose is coming of age, and coming out of the closet. Dad, a widower, wants to make sure Rose’s coming out is easy and pain free as possible. Sometimes he tries a little too hard.

Category : Webseries

Date Sent : January 18th, 2010

Open to : Female, Male

Job Location : Toronto, Canada

Expires : February 15th, 2010

1.) FEMALE (18-24; Caucasian) – ROSE. Actress 18 or over TO PLAY 15. Rose considers herself the quiet/shy type. She’s smart, does well in school, stays out of trouble. Her quick wit is reserved for her closest friends – especially Dad. Having just come out to herself, this new perspective on life feels sudden and takes some getting used to. Satisfied with being the wallflower, her fear is that coming out to the rest of the world might end up putting an unwanted spotlight on herself;

2.) FEMALE (18-24; any ethnicity) – VANESSA. Actress 18 or over TO PLAY 15. Vanessa and Rose have been best friends since they were little. When Rose comes out to her and professes her feelings Vanessa is really shaken up. Vanessa’s sexuality is unclear – but what is clear is the thought of being gay terrifies her to the point of being outwardly homophobic;

3.) MALE (41-50; Caucasian) – NATHAN. A widower since Rose’s birth. Nathan works from home as a freelance graphic designer. He’s centered his life around Rose and being the best dad he can be. He’s never really dated or pursued any romantic interests (although he’s recently allowed friends to set him up on dates). Rose’s sexuality has been long suspected, but never confirmed. Her recent turmoil over this issue, and her reluctance to talk about it (contrary to their usual open communication) is tarring him up. He wants the best life possible for Rose. Later, when she finally does come out he supports her coming out of the closet adamantly. Maybe he’s even pushing her out?;

4.) MALE (18-24; any ethnicity) – KENNY. Actor 18 or over TO PLAY 15. Kenny and Rose are very close; to the point that everyone at school assumes they’re a couple, much to their annoyance. Kenny is always bursting with energy (probably a touch of ADHD!) School takes second priority to having fun. Girls and girl-politics are a total mystery to him, not from a lack of trying. Rose’s coming out to him is met with MUCH enthusiasm;

5.) FEMALE (41-50; any ethnicity) – VANESSA’S MOM. A stern woman who expects the very best of her daughter. She makes no allusions to the fact that she thinks homosexuality is wrong. Her beliefs are tide closely to her cultural and/or religious background, which she expects Vanessa to uphold as well;

6.) FEMALE (41-50; any ethnicity) – ANGELA. People-person with bubbly personality. Always says too much, but never manages to offend people with this trait;

7.) MALE TEEN (15-17; any ethnicity) – SKATER-DUDE. Buddy of Kenny’s

Five Ways To Twitter

Twitter has quickly become the center of our social media lives, and for good reason. It is a extremely helpful tool, and fairly easy to use.

Although there are several different ways to twitter.

Twitter Marketing Scale

I highly recommend looking at them as a progression. Begin comfortably as a conversationalist, and continue onward to integrate your marketing message you are attempting to communicate. Salesmanship requires a certain amount of tact that you will adjust too after you have begun the conversation for a while. Obviously, there are a few potholes to remember, but now you have a simple roadmap to follow.

Todds Webseries Brought To Network

The innovative Web series It’s Todd’s Show has been picked up for airing on the MEVIO Network (www.ItsToddsShow.mevio.com), one of the fastest growing entertainment sites on the Web. It is a significant move for the innovative web-based comedy series because it will give the Philly-based production access to MEVIO’s more than six million visitors monthly. Launched in March 2009, It’s Todd’s Show stars a team of ornery mutts as they take Seinfeld-like potshots at everyday life from the canine point of view. The rapidly growing fan base for this wacky comedy show earned a huge boost with the introduction of the show’s newest feature, Bark Hollywood.

6 Ways To Rock The Tubefilter Web TV Meetup!

The January Tubefilter Hollywood Web TV Meetup on Thursday January 21—it’s all about the FUEPIC FU that is, as creators Zadi Diaz and Steve Woolf join us to launch the EPIC FU Network! They are extending their award-winning web series brand into a network of like-minded series, all under the EPIC FU banner. And to see them first, before anyone else in the world, you’ll have to be at the Meetup. And HP and Intel is sponsoring the evening, providing free beer and wine for Meetup attendees and giving away and HP Envy laptop and HP DreamScreen. And The Bui Brothers will be shooting some of their signature high-end photography of web video’s finest, so make sure you’re looking good. Tickets are still available, though we have a good feeling they will be sold out very soon. (Remember last time we had free beer and wine?)

(Michael) YOU MUST ATTEND THIS EVENT!!! It is a great way to begin networking, and making strides in your career. Besides Steve & Zadi are amazing. Here are the first three tips. Remember there are six tips total, but the last three tips reside with the keepers of the kingdom over at Tubefilter. (Follow the link at the end)

1. Do Your Homework!

This time you have a lot of homework to do, since EPIC FU traces its origins to the early days of online video series in 2006. Back then the ‘hyperfast-paced pop culture newscast’ series was called JETSET, scored a deal with Next New Networks, was then poached by upstart Revision3 and eventually went off on its own once again. To get a feel for the series make sure to watch at least a half dozen episodes from throughout their history. Pay attention to how the show evolved, added new features and became the well-known (and well-watched with over 35 million views) indie web series brand that it is today.

2. Ask Smart Questions

Each month we try to bring a selective group of speakers that you want to hear from, and they are there to connect with you guys. So have some thoughtful questions ready during the Q&A with them. Don’t worry if you think you’ll look stupid for asking what’s on your mind. Odds are you aren’t the only one who wants to know the answer. Zadi and Steve are veterans of web series production and have seen the highs and lows of building a brand in this growing space. Make the most of their attention and ask what’s on your mind!

3. Be a Connector

This is essential to good networking anywhere. If you’ve been coming to the Web TV Meetups for a while now, you still remember your first one. You know, when it seemed like everyone knew each other and you didn’t? Well now you can be the connector. Introduce people you know, or just met, to one another. Introduce them not only with their name but with a brief background to go with it. Think: “Hey Julie, have you met Todd? He’s the creator and star of the hit series Todd Eats Too Much which just passed 2 million views on YouTube. Todd, Julie is a development exec at NBC Digital and a total foodie, you guys should chat.”
